GB & ME
*$10-$12

Three Chord Country and Other Stuff

Greg Baker and Michael Everitt met as members of the Tosco Music Party advisory committee which got them playing music together at weekly jam sessions. It soon became clear that their styles and talents were a good match and playing music together was pretty effortless. So they formed the duo GB & ME (pronounced gee bee and me) and started playing in coffee shops, civic events, songwriter rounds and anywhere else people would let them. For several months they were the Saturday night house band at The Bean House Coffee Shop in Matthews.  Their preferred style is pretty much roadhouse country but they have been known to play tunes by Jimmy Buffet, Bob Segar, Guy Clark, the Eagles and even Kid Rock. Oh, and they have a few songs of their own too. They have played several venues and events in the area including, Festival in the Park, ArtFest of Matthews, Puckett's Farm Equipment, The Evening Muse, Freshly Brewed Coffee, Matthews Taste and Trade, York Summerfest and many more.  Their goal is to make sure you have as much fun listening to them as they have performing for you.

Rebecca Rippy
*$10-$12

5:10 to Nowhere

When Jamie Hoover (The Spongetones) gets excited about something musically, we should all listen. He has only been in the music business for more than 27 years. In that time, his musical duties include songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, producer, recording engineer, arranger, bassist, sometimes drummer, and other various musical noises.
So after working with musical newcomer (and Belmont resident) Rebecca Rippy on her debut record, he just couldn't contain himself.
"I have had the privilege to work with a lot of great artists over the years, " said Hoover. "But I have to admit, I haven't been this excited about a project in a long while".
See her now at the Sylvia Theater.

Don Dixon's Book & Music Party

Don Dixon has devoted his entire life to the popular song. Whether working as a singer, songwriter, musician or producer, he has always tried to capture the essence of his life in the moment. Dixon went solo in 1983 and has released nine cds.

He is currently at work on a new recording with his long-time touring band, Jamie Hoover and Jim Brock. After twenty years, Jamie has named the group "Don Dixon & the Jump Rabbits". The new platter is called "The Nu-Look" and is due in May 2008.

Moses Cherry & The Topless Gospel Choir

Case Federal & The Agents (Seth Phillips - Sax, Colin Ray - Drums, Alex Watts - Electric Guitar, Steve Saldute- Bass).  Recently we have been working with new material and new additions to the band, forming our style as a blend of jazz/indie/avant-folk known as Case Federal & the Agents, so come out and see us and hear what our new noise is all about !

Elonzo began as a "family gathering" trio comprised of singer/songwriter Jeremy Davis (Vocals/Guitar), sister Maggie Bourdeau (Vocals/Keys) and brother-in-law Dan Bourdeau (Drums/Percussion) but have recently expanded to include Dennis Contreras on bass.

Elonzo is an independant Americana/Folk Rock band based out of Rock Hill, South Carolina. In the heart of the Carolina Piedmont, they write songs about everyday life.

Simplified
*$10-$12

It's evident after only a listen or two, that Simplified's members truly possess a unique and endearing vibe. Clee Laster, the band's six foot seven front man, controls the reins on a remarkable vocal style featuring a nearly percussive timbre but heavy on the rock influence. Laster also plays a mean acoustic guitar, a perfect backdrop for the rich textures and ethereal string antics of electric guitarist, Chris Sheridan, who understands a simple, tasteful approach works best. Chris Lynch (bass) focuses brilliantly on a satisfying backbeat and Tim Lail (drums), confidently anchors the band, providing grounded, signature beats.

Simplified takes up where genre benders stop short, expanding cleverly on music that sounds familiar, but is decidedly different. The music trips down a path of neatly packaged and delivered lyrics combined with innovative musicianship. Simplified is a spirited journey focusing on the undeniable adage of strength in numbers and it is this dynamic that is the band's most intriguing element. (excerpts taken from websites)

Jazz / funk / rock / spin

The very hip, very funky, Dubbco Collabo is making quite an impact on the music scene in the Upstate of South Carolina. After teaming up for the International Music Festival at the Handlebar earlier this year (and winning) members of Resco, McGuso and RDubb decided to make Dubbco Collabo a permanent act.  A show generally consists of 60% originals and 40% covers of other musicians songs. Dubbco covers everything from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Spin Doctors and Sublime to Snoop Dogg and Eminem. The encore song is always R-Dubb’s original “Kakalacki” which can also be heard at all Greenville drive baseball games.

Sol Driven Train
*$10-$12

Oz / ride / jazzy / funkgrass

Sol Driven Train is a band in motion. Perpetually piling on and off the bus, the momentum of their hard work and heart-felt music propels the group upward. At shows, the band members bounce to the pulse of the music along with the crowd. Stylistically the band “seamlessly mixes Allmanesque Southern rock, languid world-beat, swampy funk and downright catchy melodies as they swap lead singers and instruments. A punchy horn section adds an extra dimension of sweaty soul to the genre-blurring jam party” (Atlanta Creative Loafing, 11/21/06).

All that sweat is paying off for Sol Driven Train. With their honest songwriting and energetic live performances, they are attracting fans devoted to witnessing their musical progression.

THE COAL YARD PRESENTS:
Not Waving But Drowning
with special appearance by:
The Euphonius Ensemble
*$7-$10

Not Waving But Drowning is a cabaret steampunk hoedown from New York City. Their songs feature 3- and 4-part vocal harmonies, literate and provocative lyrics, and deftly arranged acoustic and electric melodies. Their debut album, Any Old Iron, incorporates elements from gypsy punk to Weimar torch songs to old-time sea shanties. The band's live performance will take you on a rollicking tour through a rag and bone shop, where a jazz funeral marches through an indie rock show, strains of high lonesome harmonies sing out from a smoky blues club, and buzzing electric guitars meet dusty instruments left in an attic.

They call themselves the Euphonious Ensemble, the word “euphonious” means “pleasing to the ear.” In giddy moments, when they nail one of their songs perfectly with a clear ringing sound as the last note is played, they have coined the word “euphonia” for that pleasant feeling that accompanies a song well played.

Playing live in fact is where Cravin' Melon is at its best, so it's only fitting that the bio tells the story of the fans, as much as the band. From the fanatical FRC (Front Row Club) to newly indoctrinated "melonheads", the age range of faithful followers spans 3 generations. Instantly addicting, fun-loving melodies battered up with swaggering southern charm is the classic recipe for a down-home party with Cravin' Melon as the congenial hosts! The re-loaded rhythm section of bassist Rob Clay, drummer Gary Greene, (former percussion player for Hootie) and keyboardist Chad Barger, crank out the horse-power for the road-hugging vocals of lead singer Doug Jones, and the top-down guitar licks of Jimbo Chapman!

LIVE CONCERT VIDEO WILL BE SHOT AT THIS SHOW so BE Loud n’ BE Proud

Caleb.Davis.Band. is a newly formed group birthed out of the south with roots deep in the tradition of soul-based music. The band's original sound is best compared to a gumbo - taking several different styles, throwing them all in the pot, and laying it all down over a nice, fat groove. Whether it be the highly energetic, intricate melodies of Charlie Parker, the fat, slow back beat of Al Green, or the 'wake you up, shake you up, make you want to shout' feel of down home, burnin' gospel - the influences of Caleb.Davis.Band. have surely inspired a new sound that always feels good.

THE MAN THAT I CAN'T BE

Bill Noonan is a veteran of the Carolina music scene, most widely known as leader and chief songwriter of the Rank Outsiders, North Carolina-based roots-rock pioneers who were a popular fixture on the Southeastern music scene from 1990 until 2002. Now, with the release of his second solo CD, THE MAN THAT I CAN'T BE,

Noonan fully asserts himself as a solo artist and front man, with compelling vision as a songwriter, vocalist, and musician. THE MAN THAT I CAN'T BE offers a collection of genre-hopping originals and eclectic covers that ably demonstrate his skill with a full range of essential American musical styles: from bluegrass and honky-tonk to retro-pop, rockabilly, and old-school R&B.

South 85
& Blue Dogs
*$12-$15

South 85

With roots deep in the Carolinas, South85 blends country, folk, southern rock, and bluegrass to give you a listening experience that you won't soon forget. Driven by the original songwriting of Kathy Osborne and the voice of Tracy Wyatt, South85 is in a classification all their own - radio worthy songs along with an atmosphere of a back-porch jam.The marked “cowgirl” attitude and lifestyle exemplified by both Tracy and Kathy is interwoven throughout songs of independence, celebration of the south, hope, and plain old fun. The band may blend a rocking electric stratocaster with a banjo or ease an acoustic ballad with dobro and mandolin with their varied sounds and themes.
Winners of "Americana Showcase" - 2008 Charlotte Music Awards
Winner of "Best Songwriter - Kathy Osborne" - 2008 Charlotte Music Awards

Blue Dogs

Founded initially as a part-time love affair for writing and playing music, the Blue Dogs spent the better part of the early 90’s honing their songs and live show at venues throughout Mid-Atlantic. Founding members and South Carolina natives, Bobby Houck (lead vocals/guitar) and Hank Futch (bass/vocals) have played together in one incarnation or another since the late 80’s, but it wasn’t until the release of the band’s debut self-titled album in 1996 that the band committed to making music full-time. Through the years, the Blue Dogs have achieved a host of accolades, including numerous national tours, 20-plus adds at commercial radio across the US, and several record releases, all under the guise of an independent touring band.

Vigilantes of LOVE
w/ Rebecca Rippy
*$8-$10
Paste Music Magazine, in a poll conducted by both writers and artists, listed Bill Mallonee in their "100 Greatest Living Songwriters Poll." "At the end of the day, it's about the story living under your own skin. In my work, I've just tried to chase that story down and put something of a frame around it for a spell."
Whether writing Americana or trippier stuff, Mallonee seems equally at home with both. He says, "I think there were always huge connections between the Brits and their affinities for '60's west Coast psychedelia...the Byrds being an obvious example.

Unique, individual music style with a fresh clear voice; able to attain pristine tones and then use melodic vocal turns to take you on a journey you will want to take again and again. You won't know if Rebecca Rippy  belongs in folk, country, or soft rock because your ears desire to bend toward what you enjoy most.  As if this isn't enough, her smile and positive attitude are contagious to those who cross her path.

Al Stewart LIVE!
w/ Dave Nachmanoff
*$18-$20

New CD "Uncorked"

CLICK ON PICTURE FOR YOUTUBE VIDEO

With the arrival of a new century, Al Stewart has returned to his inimitable brand of historical folk-rock. In 2005 he released "A Beach Full of Shells", which was set in exotic places from First World War England to the 1950s rock'n'roll scene that influenced him.  n 2008, he released "Sparks of Ancient Light" produced, like his previous album, by Laurence Juber. Here he weaves tales of William McKinley, Lord Salisbury and Hanno the

Navigator, without losing any of the wit and crispness of delivery that made him famous.  Stewart and guitarist Dave Nachmanoff will release a live album, Uncorked: Al Stewart Live with Dave Nachmanoff on Stewart's label, Wallaby Trails Recordings, in 2009.

Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Dave Nachmanoff saw Al Stewart live for the first time at Royal Albert Hall in London in 1985 and in 2006 came back and performed with him.  In addition, he’s a heck of a songwriter in styles ranging from folk to pop who’s sold over 15,000 recordings. As a side player he’s worked with Stewart on a regular basis, as well as many others at venues as far ranging as The Bottom Line and the Edmonton Folk Festival.

Shawn Mullins
with Danielle Howle
*$15-$18

Acoustic Solo Show

Shawn Mullins is touring with his new CD release "honeydew" with it's already hit songs 'All in my Head', 'See that Train' and an old favourite 'Lullabye'! Shawn's musical accomplishments include a dozen self-produced records, two number one charting songs, grammy nomination and thousands of live performances. (excerpt taken from website)

Shawn Mullins is a '90s acoustic troubadour whose lyrics, at their worst, read like overly precious journal entries ("The road is my home / And my spirit is wild"), making him seem sometimes like Jewel with a Y-chromosome. (According to his song "Twin Rock, Oregon," Mullins has lived out of his van, too.)  Mullins is at his best when he plays to his strengths, which include an affinity for working-class characters and an eye for detail. Best of all is his sweet Georgia drawl, which pours honey over the aching "Soul Child" and the memorable chorus of his breakthrough hit, "Lullabye." In spite of releasing is 12th album this year, he is an artist whose skills are still on the rise.
Daniel Durchholz -- Amazon.com

"Danielle Howle is a Southern storyteller with a gorgeous sense of melody and a voice that should be pouring out of stereos everywhere... but she is true to the underground rock community that first nurtured her and has not made the leap to televised fame." If she never gets there, consider yourself lucky to have found her , she is one to treasure."

A CULLIS ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTATION:
The Tsunami Wave Riders

*$8-$10
Calling All Parrot Heads, Party at The Sylvia Theater, "Island Style" with The Tsunami Wave Riders!

The Tsunami Wave Riders combine the high energy of rock (classic, southern and alternative) and reggae rhythms with traditional island instruments - such as the Hawaiian ukulele and Caribbean steel drums - that instantly puts listeners on their favorite beach. In fact, that is the goal of the Tsunami Wave Riders - to help people to relax and de-stress with some feel-good music.

Although band members love the beach and the surf, the name of the band actually comes from the belief that we can overcome "tsunamis," huge challenges in life that threaten to drown us, by "riding the waves" with the help of friends, family and some feel-good island music. With the right "surfboard," you can learn to not only ride the waves - you might actually enjoy the journey.

Are you a "wave rider"?  Surf's up, so grab your board.  It's time to ride da music...island style!

Danielle Howle
& Rebecca Rippy
SYLVIA SANTA NIGHT:
*$8-$10

"Danielle Howle is a Southern storyteller with a gorgeous sense of melody and a voice that should be pouring out of stereos everywhere... but she is true to the underground rock community that first nurtured her and has not made the leap to televised fame." If she never gets there, consider yourself lucky to have found her , she is one to treasure."
New York Times

Unique, individual music style with a fresh clear voice; able to attain pristine tones and then use melodic vocal turns to take you on a journey you will want to take again and again. You won't know if Rebecca Rippy  belongs in folk, country, or soft rock because your ears desire to bend toward what you enjoy most.  As if this isn't enough, her smile and positive attitude are contagious to those who cross her path.

A CULLIS ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTATION:
Tori Sparks
*$8-$10

Tori Sparks calls Nashville home, but spends most of her time on the road in the U.S. and Europe. Called "a knockout" by the Village Voice, Tori just released her third album, The Scorpion in the Story in June 2009. The Scorpion in the Story is a tour diary in the form of a concept album. Each song was written about one of the many colorful individuals Tori met while touring across the U.S. last year - just her and her van covering thousands of miles, just Tori and her guitars playing hundreds of shows.

Tori's travels have greatly informed her lyrically-driven songwriting, and her range of influences, from Tom Waits to Joni Mitchell, has shaped her unique rhythms and uncanny voice. The thirteen songs on The Scorpion in the Story range from dusky, thumping blues, to sweet, folk-infused ballads.

 BENEFIT SHOW FOR
SAMARITAN'S FEET
*$8-$10
2009 Colgate Country Showdown Regional Finalists

Gal Friday's sound comes from a genre-challenging marriage of country, blues, gospel, southern rock and bluegrass, with a vocal blend that only 3 sisters can share. Our band represents those genres well, offering a piece of who they are to what they play. Steve Hicks on Acoustic, Brennan Roth on electric, Ryan York on Drums, Nate Proczak on bass, Marty Connell on keys and Michael York on banjo.

"In August of this year, The Sylvia Theater hosted the 2009 Colgate Country Showdown Regionals. And Gal Friday was hooked on Sylvia!  We are so glad to be returning!
Come meet GFB and spend the evening helping us raise awareness for our favorite charity, Samaritan's Feet. You'll be able to meet it's founder, Manny Ohonme, and we'll be covering your favorites from Wynonna, U2, The Allman Brothers and more. It'll be a great night full of music wrapped up in Sylvia's unique hospitality."
