New CD "Uncorked"

With the arrival of a new century, Al Stewart
has returned to his inimitable brand of historical folk-rock. In
2005 he released "A Beach Full of Shells", which was
set in exotic places from First World War England to the 1950s
rock'n'roll scene that influenced him. n 2008, he released
"Sparks of Ancient Light" produced, like his previous
album, by Laurence Juber. Here he weaves tales of William
McKinley, Lord Salisbury and Hanno the |
|
Navigator, without losing any of the wit and
crispness of delivery that made him famous. Stewart and
guitarist Dave Nachmanoff will release a live album, Uncorked:
Al Stewart Live with Dave Nachmanoff on Stewart's label, Wallaby
Trails Recordings, in 2009. |
| |
|

|
Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Dave
Nachmanoff saw Al Stewart live for the first time at Royal
Albert Hall in London in 1985 and in 2006 came back and performed
with him. In addition, he’s a heck of a songwriter in
styles ranging from folk to pop who’s sold over 15,000
recordings. As a side player he’s worked with Stewart on a
regular basis, as well as many others at venues as far ranging as
The Bottom Line and the Edmonton Folk Festival. |

|
Acoustic Solo Show
|
 |
Shawn Mullins is touring with his new CD
release "honeydew" with it's already hit songs 'All in
my Head', 'See that Train' and an old favourite 'Lullabye'!
Shawn's musical accomplishments include a dozen self-produced
records, two number one charting songs, grammy nomination and
thousands of live performances. (excerpt taken
from website) |
|
Shawn Mullins is a '90s acoustic
troubadour whose lyrics, at their worst, read like overly
precious journal entries ("The road is my home / And my
spirit is wild"), making him seem sometimes like Jewel with
a Y-chromosome. (According to his song "Twin Rock,
Oregon," Mullins has lived out of his van, too.)
Mullins is at his best when he plays to his strengths, which
include an affinity for working-class characters and an eye for
detail. Best of all is his sweet Georgia drawl, which pours
honey over the aching "Soul Child" and the memorable
chorus of his breakthrough hit, "Lullabye." In spite
of releasing is 12th album this year, he is an artist whose
skills are still on the rise.

ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTATION:
The Tsunami Wave Riders
|
*$8-$10
|
| Calling
All Parrot Heads, Party at The Sylvia Theater, "Island
Style" with The Tsunami Wave Riders! |
 |
The Tsunami Wave Riders combine the high
energy of rock (classic, southern and alternative) and
reggae rhythms with traditional island instruments - such
as the Hawaiian ukulele and Caribbean steel drums - that
instantly puts listeners on their favorite beach. In fact,
that is the goal of the Tsunami Wave Riders - to help
people to relax and de-stress with some feel-good music.
|
|
|
Although band members love the beach and the
surf, the name of the band actually comes from the belief that
we can overcome "tsunamis," huge challenges in life
that threaten to drown us, by "riding the waves" with
the help of friends, family and some feel-good island music.
With the right "surfboard," you can learn to not only
ride the waves - you might actually enjoy the journey. |
|
Are you a "wave rider"?
Surf's up, so grab your board. It's time to ride da
music...island style!

ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTATION:
Tori
Sparks |
*$8-$10
|

|
Tori Sparks calls Nashville home, but
spends most of her time on the road in the U.S. and Europe.
Called "a knockout" by the Village Voice, Tori just
released her third album, The Scorpion in the Story in June
2009. The Scorpion in the Story is a tour diary in the form of a
concept album. Each song was written about one of the many
colorful individuals Tori met while touring across the U.S. last
year - just her and her van covering thousands of miles, just
Tori and her guitars playing hundreds of shows. |
|
Tori's travels have greatly informed her lyrically-driven
songwriting, and her range of influences, from Tom Waits to Joni
Mitchell, has shaped her unique rhythms and uncanny voice. The
thirteen songs on The Scorpion in the Story range from dusky,
thumping blues, to sweet, folk-infused ballads.

|
|
“Sometimes,” Corey Crowder says with a
laugh when referring to his music, “I think I would have fit in
better if I’d come up thirty years ago.” There’s irony in
that statement. With over five million plays of the songs on his
MySpace page, major television placements, and a major label
record under his belt, Corey, at age 26, is virtually a model of
how to commence a musical career, 21st century style. Commentators
have described his music variously as americana, alternative
country, folk, or even funky storytelling. By any name, it recalls
roots rock and soul sounds of the sixties and seventies—updated
for today. |

Experience a special acoustic evening with one of the

Founded initially as a part-time love affair for
writing and playing music, the Blue Dogs spent the better
part of the early 90’s honing their songs and live show at
venues throughout Mid-Atlantic. Founding members and South
Carolina natives, Bobby Houck (lead vocals/guitar) and Hank Futch
(bass/vocals) have played together in one incarnation or another
since the late 80’s, but it wasn’t until the release of the
band’s debut self-titled album in 1996 that the band committed
to making music full-time. Through the years, the Blue Dogs have
achieved a host of accolades, including numerous national tours,
20-plus adds at commercial radio across the US, and several record
releases, all under the guise of an independent touring band. |

CULLIS
ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS:
Sara Scott
w/ Justin
Taylor
and Sarah
DeShields |
*$8-$10
|
|
Sara Scott has been singing and playing
piano since she was 2 years old, and has played guitar for
almost 8 years. She is a prolific writer and talented musician
and vocalist. She travels at times with a full band, which
includes drums, percussion, guitars, keys, violin, and mandolin.
However, the consensus among her fans is “Sara is at her best
when it is her, her voice, and her acoustic guitar”. It is
usually a mix of both options that form a Sara Scott show. She
has played for groups ranging in size from 10 in local high
schools and colleges to 5,000 at Bobcats Arena in Charlotte,
NC. |
 |
|
Sara Scott’s music is fresh, honest, soul-stirring, beautiful.
It is a mix of folk, rock, pop, jazz, with a country thread
woven through. Her vocals are haunting, angelic, soaring. Sara
herself is transparent, honest, and lively. She plays regularly
in Charlotte, NC and the surrounding areas, as well as
Nashville, TN.
|
| |
|

|
With a bit of a purist-love for that natural
vulnerable sound of the acoustic guitar and vocals, Justin Taylor's
music is raw and hopefully beautiful and endearingly realistic as a
result; exposing voicings, melodies, lyrics and himself for what
they truly are - void of the forgivingness of production. |
"Sarah DeShields's crazy yet
captivating vocal style has been compared to Tori Amos and
even Dolores from The Cranberries. Sarah's songs exhibit a
touching warmth. Rather than taking betrayal, war
and despair as her subjects Sarah looks to her faith in
God and her own frailty. The result is challenging, moving
and often uplifting."
--Matthew Seymour, BBC Radio North Yorkshire. |

Bluebird Café. On drums and percussion, Scott McLaughlin’s
work provides the music’s propulsive vigor, his experience as
one of North Carolina’s most respected musicians evident in
the grooves. Victoria McLaughlin, a classically trained cellist
from Colombia, provides the rich bottom and unusual flavor
running under Rippy’s stream-of-consciousness lyrics, showing
the same sensitivity and luxurious tone she’s displayed with
the Charlotte Philarmonic Orchestra and the Vivace Quartet. On
stage they’re joined by bassist Brian Doell and acoustic
guitarist Terry Wheeler, multi-instrumentalists, band leaders
and recording artists in their own rights. Terry Wheeler, also
adds background vocals.
“I started writing songs because I wanted to reach out to
people,” she said. “To have people now coming to me to tell
me how they relate to my songs, that’s one of the greatest
rewards that I can ever hope to receive!” ~Rebecca Rippy |

2009 was a landmark year for East Coast
folkstress Amelia Curran. With the release of Hunter,
Hunter in Canada, the much anticipated follow-up to War Brides,
Amelia Curran brought it back home and carried her work further a field
than ever before. The album and artist had a total of 4 ECMA
nominations this year, and Canadian publication Exclaim Magazine’s
Wood, Wires & Whiskey column included the album in their
best of the year’s worth of folk, roots and traditional
recordings. Hunter, Hunter was a national folk, community and
college radio success, with a Galaxie Top Spins of 2009 spot and
a CKUA Top 20. With a Juno nomination for Roots and Traditional
Solo Album of the Year, Curran is attracting national attention. |

| Justin Rutledge returns with The
Early Widows, a stoic collection of songs that
rehabilitate the heart and illuminate the dark. Produced
with intense fragility by Hawksley Workman, Rutledge’s
fourth album is an arrestingly moving and lyrically
meticulous piece of art penned by one of the most
progressive songwriters at work today. Shouldering an
electric guitar instead of his trademark acoustic,
Rutledge infuses the new material with a newfound
conviction and drive. |

TATTERMASK--tat • ter • mask. n. a mask or
false face put forth by a grieving or angry person as a
shield, falsely signaling to the outside world that all is
well. The tattermask is meant to deflect aspersions
cast by callous people on the outside and preserve the
vulnerable soul behind the mask. Only a select few will
see the true face hidden by the tattermask. |
| Hailing from the suburbs of
Charlotte, NC, Tattermask mixes melodic vocal lines,
rhythmically powerful drums, explosive bass, and searing
guitar work. Powerful, energetic, emotional, rhythmic, and
intense, Tattermask entrances all eyes and ears within
their reach. |

Darin and Brooke Aldridge are beautiful
young newlyweds who sing and play a rich combination of
bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, and country duets certain to please
fans on any stage or festival, church or concert hall. Their
fine harmony work showcases two fine individual voices which
blend to perfection, and they are backed by perfect
instrumentation.
Brooke’s voice is powerful and emotional.
Darin’s harmony work is tightly matched and phrased as only
family can do. Think of the old Everly Brothers duets, except
one voice is female and one is male, and one can begin to
understand what a fresh new sound they have. It is old but new;
still bluegrass but also contemporary acoustic music. They two
have won hearts in the Carolinas for several years. With their
new release their voice is stronger than ever, and they are
ready for the national stage. |

A TRUE
ACOUSTIC SUPER GROUP!! |

The Definition of the word Super group: A music
group whose performers are already famous from having performed
individually or in other groups. By teaming up such
revered masters as dobro player Mike Auldridge, bassist Tom Gray
both founding members of the legendary, revolutionary band the
Seldom Scene with rising-star vocalist Darren Beachley (formerly
of bluegrass powerhouse Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver),
Mandolinist Norman Wright (Bluegrass Cardinals, Country
Gentlemen) and banjo player Mark Delaney (Country Gentlemen)
such a group has been formed. Darren Beachley and the Legends of
the Potomac harness the very best of bluegrass past and future.
Soulful contemporary ballads share space with more rugged,
traditional fair, with Beachley’s soaring tenor front and
center and the tasteful virtuosity of Auldridge, Gray,
mandolinist Norman Wright, and banjo player Mark Delaney
steering the music with peerless precision. With their
wide-ranging influences and open-ended approach to acoustic
